Thanks Campbell.

So short answer is that upwind of target, VMG is used, with detail provided by your very excellent post.

Thanks, that is helpful.

And for tacking periods (dotted line), what does Expedition assume for Bsp? (upwind VMG? or extra distance due to tacking with upwind targets? or something else?)

We've been trying to get a better understanding of the routes Expedition has been giving us.

We're noticing that the Bsp that expedition gives in optimal routes, seems to be inconsistent with the set/drift/brg/distance output. I'm wondering if I'm misinterpreting the numbers or missing something.

ie:

From Brg & Distance, I have a ground track for the period
From Drift & Set, I can back out the contribution of tide for the period

The result should be water track, and course to steer for the period, which I can scale back down by the period, to give me Bsp.

However, this number seems to be different from the Bsp given.

((i also tried taking drift & set from this period and the next one and averaging.I do the above calculations by working out latitude and longitude components through trigonometry).

Am I missing something here?

Thanks Nick. It looks like you include the expedition '#' as part of the checksum whereas NMEA excludes the initial '$'.

Follow-up, is there a listing of the channel names against channel id anywhere? I think I can just call GETCHANNELNAME on each of them, but since there are 204 or so, I thought I'd check whether it was already available somewhere.

I'm exploring using the expedition protocol both to receive data from Expedition and send commands to it. I couldn't find details of the checksum used on each line, could I get the details of it? I presume that the checksum needs to be correct for Expedition to process commands?

Though a bit of trial an error, I reproduced it as follows:

1) Completely clean Expedition 11.9.5 install (including clearing out Expedition entries in the windows registry)
2) Select area, Great Circle
3) Enter username/password
4) Update Models
5) Download (without selecting and models) - will come up with the no models selected error
6) Cancel
7) Select area, Great Circle
8) Select Model
9) Download -> Crashes now

To recover from the above - reenter correct username & password and everything starts working again.

Step 5) & 6) from a clean install seem to be the key issues here. (ie: if we don't cancel, but select a model it will work), if you cancel without doing step 5), then when you reopen username/password aren't populated and you need to enter them, so can't go straight to selecting model & download.

A complete edge case problem that hopefully folk will be able to avoid, now that its described.

One thing I noticed - if you have the wrong password set, the GC downloader will crash Expedition. Happened for me with 11.8.6, 11.9.4, 11.9.5 until I reentered password and it started working.

Nick,

Just a quick, belated, note to say thank you for the 'Optimal Route' weather button. Have only been back for a couple of races, after a season away, but its been a huge help!

Hi,

Installed 10.10.10, but it doesn't seem to recognize my license code, do I need to request a new one?

Thx, Andrew.

As I go through pre-race prep, probably my number one wish right now (maybe even more than having CTS in optimization results - hint hint)...

Could we have Time in the Weather Ribbon default to the last time that it was set, rather than the current time displayed?

Or, even better:

Given there seems to be space for another button next to it, could we have a 'Start' button that sets time to the race start time if set in the optimizer settings, or greyed out if the optimizer settings are to optimize from current time and location.

This way you could at a glance see whether you had that tick box checked correctly and makes it much more straightforward to go to race start time and review the optimizer results/weather, etc. when you are few days away from race start.

Please please please... and thanks!
