Technical Q&A » Which Laptop » 5/06/2025 7:31 pm |
I prefer a Mini PC running on 12vdc. I used a portable monitor connected to the PC with USB C.
Just replaced my last mini with a MeLe 4C Quieter Mini. Has no fan and is silent. Only $250 on Amazon and the monitor was $70. Just slightly thicker than an iPhone.
Technical Q&A » Ping start Line settings » 5/06/2025 7:13 pm |
I use Ventus Pro to Ping the Start line into Expedition and to the B&G H5000 GFD. When to boat is stationary the GFD Start Display shows the distance to the start line as 36’, which happens to be the length of the boat and GPS offset distance from the transom to the bow. If I go into Expedition and remove the GPS offset the GPD displays the correct distance, roughly zero.
if looks like Expedition offset and the B&G offset, or Ventus offset are being added together. Should the offset be removed in Expedition or in the B&G setup.

How about developing an AI assisted calibration routine. Make an easy way to frequently calibrate and recalibrate instruments without requiring much human intervention.
Technical Q&A » No mark information » 2/24/2025 3:11 pm |
Nick,
I am having the same issue with version 11. I updated the Expedition config file with the two magnetic model files. The magnetic warning went away but I don't have any bearing or distance to waypoints. Also no layline information.
I double checked that the new files are in Expedition. What else can I try to get this function working.

Technical Q&A » Display expedition data on B&G HV 20/20 via h5000 » 7/31/2022 1:07 pm |
If you want to send data from Expedition that isn't available on the H5000 system, you will need to add the USB Actisense. This will send Expedition data to the N2K network that can be seen on the displays.

Campbell,
I have the same issue with an H5000 Performance system. I send Time to Layline from Expedition via USB Actisense to the B&G displays. The time jumps too much. What settings in Expedition do you recommend?

On a W/L race, it makes sense to use VMG%. Polar% is only percentage of speed in the direction you're sailing so if you were sailing around at very wide wind angles, you could potentially have great polar% but in reality not doing too wall in your race.
When analysing, remember that your boatspeed is probably much more accurate than your wind angle. Good boatspeed calibration is a lot easier to get than wind angle calibration that differs every day and during each day. When I do analysis I keep an eye at target bsp % as well, even though it only tells the half true, it will at least give a more accurate output.
In my experience (especially in a one-design fleet or sailing with similar boats) the best approach on W/L races is to use the data to analyse and present HOW you sail the boat (fast/low or high/slow, more or less heeled than normal, more or less rudder than normal) and then cross-reference that to your percieved performance against your competition.
Can you clarify your issue in your 2nd section? Are you referring to tuning the numbers in the start box?
I placed a TWS and TWD hold in the Start menu. I used the average TWS and TWD from the values derived in strip chart for the entire race. In the course window I looked at the total time to sail the course. I then adjusted down the Nav Polar % until the predicted elapsed time matched the actual time it took to sail the race. I would guess that this method would be the most accurate way to compare theoretical VPP performance to actual performance on the race. Calibration values would have no influence unless recorded TWS is incorrect.

I am trying to analyze the performance on a recent W/L race. I have use strip chart to look at the overall VMG% and Polar%. Which is more accurate means to identify performance?
I have also looked at the course box and assigned the average TWS and TWD in the start hold boxes. Then I adjusted the nav polar % until my predicted elapsed time is equal to the actual elapsed time. The resulting polar percentage is significantly lower using this method vs the strip chart. Which method is more accurate and why is Polar % between 5% to 10% lower using the predicted course time.

Can you provide a sample polar heel table so that I can create my own. I think it will have variables for TWS and Upwind vs Downwind
Ventus Navigation » Ventus Pro - Stop and Restart Timer » 9/19/2021 8:11 pm |
New Ventus installation on Expedition V11. Start time from Ventus works. Stop time also works. Unable to restart timer from Ventus.
I am also getting multiple Mark 0’s placed into the end of the route. Ping new mark works. Select next Mark doesn’t work.
