Suggestions for new features and capabilities » Garmin GPSMAP 86SC integration » 5/15/2024 7:17 am

Was that a carbon-fiber boat?

For other applications, like getting mission criticial information from a wind sensor at the top of the mast down into the network, bluetooth is a bad choice. Wi-Fi isn't really either.

For watches and handheld GPS, I think Garmin made a good choice in Bluetooth. My five-year-old Plantronics/Poly Bluetooth earphones to the cell phone work over 30++ meters from inside the boat to the parking lot in the marina, far beyond the advertised range. In the house, the range is much less, still a solid 15 meters. For this watch and gps handheld application, 5-10 meters, bluetooth is all that is needed. Am I wrong?  (Above, I am quoting ranges for Bluetooth 4.0, which my poly is based on. Bluetooth 5.3 range is 240 meters)

It would be fantastic if Expedition (I assume with Garmin's permission) created an emulation on our PC's of the Bluetooth feature on Garmin chartplotters that sends boat sensor information to the Garmin 86SC handheld GPS and Garmin watches, using the information in Expedition (bearing to destination, boat speed, etc.)

Even if just the standard information, that would be so helpful! With custom channels, like Expedition can do now with mast mount instrument displays, that would be out of this world! (but standard info would be a great start)

I would buy the new 86SC immediately, and later a watch, if Garmin would work with you on this Nick!  If not, maybe the protocol is open and documented?

Suggestions for new features and capabilities » Global Cloud management of waypoints » 5/06/2024 5:31 am

It would be ideal if our waypoints where shared between out boat pc and charplotters, and as well managed on the cloud without us having to download through dropbo to share with a home pc. Cherry on top, puy all the strip charts on the cloud as well.

Maybe works this way?

Home PC
- Sync to cloud account under our user name
- No backups needed, rather user can simply role back to any date choosen.

Boat PC
- Ability to subscribe to a specific cloud account. Changes are exported/imported automatically. Ideally also export all strip charts. Ideally a temporary route level sync is available, so a boat PC can subscribe to primary and guest cloud accounts of multiple users, and bring in a single route of a guest cloud account for a specific race event without bringing everything down from the guest cloud account.
- No backups needed, rather user can simply role back to any date choosen.
- Ability to choose that waypoints in boat pc are sync to charplotter or processor. Make a change to either expedition or chartplotter/processor, and sync happens within minutes.

General Discussion » Does anyone have a basic crew guide for building a route to share? » 5/02/2024 8:15 am

I could use a basic guide for the crew to (1) build a route down below on my Expedition while I and others are above and (2) Modify that route from last-minute instructions received from the race committee, e.g., move the windward mark to a distance and bearing.

Would anyone have something like that?

General Discussion » Predict Wind new weather forecasts » 12/07/2020 12:33 pm

Will there be an ability to select from the drop down list and import all the forecast models from PredictWind? (ECMWF/SPIRE/UKMO/GFS/PWG/PWE)

Which forecast model is your favorite from Long Island Sound?

I have two potential sources installed already I don't use.
A B&G Zeus3 with Wifi connectivity for example to tablets.
A Simrad GoFree WIFI-1 Wireless Module

Suggestions for new features and capabilities » Hover function » 9/14/2020 1:49 pm

(1) It would be very helpful if when the mouse cursor is over any graphic on the screen, no matter an object, line, current or wind arrow, that a dialog box can pop up explaining what it is. Inside the dialog box also show information for that spot on the map, e.g. set & drift, wind vector, wave height, depth, and other information.

(2) For those not using a mouse (e.g. a pad), or for just wanting information at a point in the map where there is not graphic, perhaps a right button click is needed. If the right click is held more than 1/2 seconds the dialog box would appear offering information on the graphic, if there is one, and show information for that spot on the map, e.g. set & drift, wind vector, wave height, depth, and other information.

(3) Offer us an option. while doing the above, to get a table and graph showing how the above will change over time. E.g. like some of our chartplotters show a sign wave with information on set & drift, allow us to quickly scan forward and back in time to understand how the data is predicted to change (compilation of all predictive data sources) as the user scrolls back and forth, perhaps with the wheel on their mouse.

General Discussion » AIS target tracking for racing » 9/14/2020 1:31 pm

What are the options to get AIS information from competitors into Expedition so I can see the tracks of competing boats either during or after a race?

My Expedition Software runs on a PC with hardwire ethernet to an H5000 and WiFi. My Z3 displays successfully show AIS information. My AIS, a B&G product NAIS-400, is connected via NMEA-2000. If I had to, I could make this AIS a backup and install a new AIS transponder as a primary.

Options with existing, I imagine would involve a N2K to ethernet adapter?  What to look for?

Options for new AIS that is ethernet or wifi connected?  What to look for?
