It seems like running the system restore worked.  I deleted display states, registry settings and registry keys.  Now the optimizer runs without Expedition shutting down. 

Thanks to Kite who sent his display states, I found the problem. It was in the ribbon, which is why deleting the display states fixed it for most people.

However, given that I don't know why/how it can break in the display states (the ribbon is a third party product), I have posted an update that traps this particular error.
