Mini PC / NUC for Expedition

Folks.  Curious if anyone has had success with Exp and NUC-like mini PCs.  We usually carry 2 consumer grade laptops, both tucked away in a safe place with a USB 3 monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse at the nav station.  I'm considering giving a consumer grade NUC a try.  Thanks

Re: Mini PC / NUC for Expedition

I'm not an expert, but there are rugged fanless NUC options which may be more suitable for boats. Laptops already have a degree of ruggedness built in that basic NUCs may not.

You can also get water proof ones, although that may complicate some connections

Re: Mini PC / NUC for Expedition

In simple hardware terms, I can vouch for running Expedition over a NUC, my home desktop is a NUC Extreme Ghost.  Waterproofness would be an utterly different issue, I dunno about taking one to sea.

Re: Mini PC / NUC for Expedition

Hi, I have had success with mini PCS and NUCs. The two companies I have used are fit-pc https://www.fit-pc.com/web/products/ipc2/ (we had these on the maxi 72 Caol Ila R) and https://www.cappuccinopc.com/solutions/fanless_mini_pc.asp
We were able to mount these in a dry position and they survived. We used the fanless ones as Nick suggested.
It was a pretty good solution. Cheers, Will

A few years back i was using devices from advantech.com. Their ARK range is industrial / bulletproof, fanless will have usb and serial port options and are low power draw. Worth a look.
