Windows updates and metered connections

A suggestion from an Exp user - if you don't want Windows updating over your expensive satellite connection, make sure it is set as a metered connection.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

One of many reasons to use Win10 over Win7.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

Ahem all.  Setting WIn 10 to a metered connection will stop Windows Updates, unless Mr Microsoft deem the update to be urgent/important enough that it will by pass the metered connection setting.  It does not - trust me - stop all Windows updates.
The only workaround I have thought of so far is to ensure you are entirely up-to-date with Windows Update on the morning of a long race, last job before leaving the house.  That minimises the risk, but does not eliminate it.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

You can also disable the Windows Update service, which may help.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

Done that too.  I have thought about going back to Win 7, but that is definitely not the answer.
One of these days deep at sea I will get hit with a mandatory 200 MB update at A$30-something dollars per Satphone MB.  Not a big risk, but definitely big consequences.  Otherwise switch off satphone until back in 4G range?
Any one with any better ideas, feel free to chip in.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

Yes, Windows 7 is getting old and creaky now and the main support has long since ceased. I think extended support will cease at the end of 2019.

The Redport Optimizer is one option:

or

I have a basic Optimizer in the office, but the Optimizer Premier looks interesting as you can also use Wifi and cellular connections with it.

I don't think it supports Iridium Go.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

Short of blocking everything and whitelisting specific sites in a firewall it is tough to block 100% of unwanted traffic.
Unfortunately, modern computer operating systems just aren't designed for high cost limited links.

Also part of the problem is most communication now takes place on port 80 even if it shouldn't so that it "looks" like web traffic to get by service restrictions.

Re: Windows updates and metered connections

I have not used the redport optimizer, but what about a general hardware firewall (such as a pepwave BR1 router) and setting web traffic blacklisting and only allowing sites you know you are going to use.  Anyone have any experience with this?
