Ahem all.  Setting WIn 10 to a metered connection will stop Windows Updates, unless Mr Microsoft deem the update to be urgent/important enough that it will by pass the metered connection setting.  It does not - trust me - stop all Windows updates.
The only workaround I have thought of so far is to ensure you are entirely up-to-date with Windows Update on the morning of a long race, last job before leaving the house.  That minimises the risk, but does not eliminate it.

Done that too.  I have thought about going back to Win 7, but that is definitely not the answer.
One of these days deep at sea I will get hit with a mandatory 200 MB update at A$30-something dollars per Satphone MB.  Not a big risk, but definitely big consequences.  Otherwise switch off satphone until back in 4G range?
Any one with any better ideas, feel free to chip in.

Short of blocking everything and whitelisting specific sites in a firewall it is tough to block 100% of unwanted traffic.
Unfortunately, modern computer operating systems just aren't designed for high cost limited links.

Also part of the problem is most communication now takes place on port 80 even if it shouldn't so that it "looks" like web traffic to get by service restrictions.
