Using Expedition for Cruising – Good Idea or Too Advanced?

Hi everyone,
I’m very new to this type of navigation and routing software and would really appreciate some community insight.

I mainly plan to use such tools for ocean and coastal cruising—not racing—so I’m trying to figure out whether Expedition is appropriate for that purpose or if it’s really overpowered and designed primarily for racing teams.

At the moment I’m testing both Expedition and Adrena Octopus, since I’m using C-Map charts. So far I’ve managed to load charts and weather data into Expedition, and now I’d like to experiment with routing. While researching, I came across posts mentioning that a trial routing key might be available from Nick, but I haven't been able to find any contact details.

My main questions for the community:

  • Is Expedition a good choice for cruising, or is it too complex and race-oriented for what I need?
  • How does it compare to tools like Adrena Octopus for non-racing use?
  • Are there other navigation or routing software packages you’d recommend specifically for cruising sailors?

Any guidance or shared experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Marco

Re: Using Expedition for Cruising – Good Idea or Too Advanced?

I think the question should be more like.... is Expedition good, well supported, has continuous free updates and upgrades, and easy to learn?
Then yes, and IMHO even against Adrena Pro.

I use multiple navigation software options, but I always gravitate towards Expedition, and then to Adrena Pro as comparison.

When it comes to support, functionality and ease of use and good results there is only one that stands out, and that is Expedition and by a huge margin.

When it comes to regular/semi-pro users there is not one company in the sailing industry that takes care of its customers like Expedition. Nick is a team of 10 in one. To be frank I have no clue how he does it.

Lastly there is the dongle....that Expedition does not have. Dongles were used decades ago, when there were no better ways to protect software licensing... This alone should paint a good picture on how drastically different the development pace is.

Re: Using Expedition for Cruising – Good Idea or Too Advanced?

Just send a key request using the built in email request.

I also thoroughly recommend Will Oxley’s ebooks on Expedition, links on the Expedition https://www.expeditionmarine.com/resources.html page and at https://www.willoxley.com/e-books. They are very good.

Will also has a recent subscription video entitled " A Gentle Introduction to Expedition Software: Starting Out". If you are new to Expedition this is an ideal place to start your learning.
