Expedition Navigation Software

Can anyone point me to any useful resources that covers the pros/cons, tips/tricks and system requirements for switching from using C-Map 4D charts to Navionics please?
I'm finding Maps Manager a pain to use and the renewal (££) for the current charts are due in April 26. Also knowing 4D is going EOL in 2027 I am wondering if it best to make the switch now.
I know the Expedition apps are different, and I already use the Navionics chart updater for chart plotter SD card. Can my current Expedition licence be used or is there a cost involved in switching? Maybe there is more to it that that?
Expedition v12.5.5 for C-Map 4D currently, will update to the latest when I get 10mins.
Thanks in advance.

Expedition can use your Navionics SD card. All Expedition variants are covered under the licence and key(s).
It is worth reading the Expedition help topic on Navionics charting.
Campbell Field also has an excellent Navionics primer on his web site.

Thanks Nick. Campbell is re-posting that primer onto his new website now for anyone else who stumbles across this thread.
One other question, is it possible/advisable to have multiple Expedition apps installed side by side? (ex. the 4D and Navionics instances, not v12.5 and v12.6)

Installed yes -- running at the same time -- not in my experience.

Slowly migrating all my resources over...

Extending on this, all charting systems have their limitations.
Having used most of the available charting formats, my go-to now is almost exclusively ENC charts from Chartworld - leasing for the period required for the area required.
Expeditions ENC rendering/quilting has vastly improved in recent times and using an 'official' chart source is highly beneficial. Despite Exp/laptop not being ECDIS compliant, this is as close as you are going to get to an official chart.
I will use Navionics for planning and exploring since most boats will have an SD card. But NEVER for pilotage, especially in unfamiliar areas. Same goes for CMAP. There are too many edits and errors giving a false sense of confidence in third party chart sources. Hence the disclaimers that all too often get forgotten "NOT AN OFFICIAL SOURCE....etc".
You can interrogate ENC charts to view CATZOC, and date of last survey etc - pretty scary reading at times.
I have real world experience of uncharted rocks, inaccurate depths etc, with no indication of potential errors. I have reported errors in charts to [supplier name redacted] with a simple description and a photo of a chart plotter screen and the next update for that chart reflected that report. Scary AF if you ask me.

This is a little difference than 4D, MAX, Navionics etc. in that C-Map has partnered with IC-ENC for non-ECDIS applications.
Obviously it doesn't satisfy any carriage requirements, but it *should* essentially be equivalent to ENCs if you keep the charts up to date.
The C-Map symbology is custom, not S-52 standard, but nice.

Thanks all!
