Re: RaceData - Expedition Data on your phone or watch

Campbell -  You've been busy!

This looks great at first glance, it was relatively easy to get it connected to Expedition and seems to work smoothly.  I might write up a quick step by step guide for those not familar with Expedition connections.

I'll try it out onboard in the next few weeks but even using Expedition in simulation mode you can see a lot of the value it brings.

For now we can keep comments about it here but I might add a dedicated section in the forum if people are interested.

Re: RaceData - Expedition Data on your phone or watch

Getting started with RaceData from Field Yachting

1.  Install the app on your phone/tablet or watch
2.  In Expedition add a new network connection (Menu->Instruments-># of Network Connections).  Just add one to whatever number is shown.
3.  Click on Instruments and on the new network connection shown on the left hand side  (Network N)
4.  Give it a name 'Phone' or whatever you choose.
5.  Set Instruments to 'Expedition'.  Connection to UDP.  Set Port to 6011.
6.  Open the app on the phone and select Settings (bottom right).  Scroll down to Network Settings.
7.  Note the Device IP shown in Blue, enter that in the instruments settings screen on Expedition. (Address)  Or you can use a .255 address to broadcast to all devices on the network
8.  In Expedition go to Playback mode and hit Simulate (assuming you are not currently connected to instruments on your boat).  Data will now be broadcast on the network connection
9.  You should now see data appearing in the app.

Lots more details available on Campbells own website at https://www.fieldyachting.com/apps

Appreciate the feedback.

Hopefully the setup instructions on my web page are sufficient to get most users going.

Re: RaceData - Expedition Data on your phone or watch

Check out the new features of RaceData - the new and powerful tool to present Expedition data on your phone, tablet or watch.  Now available for iOS and Android devices.  Also show NMEA 0183 data when Expedition is not deployed.

These new apps for Expedition are a game changer for expedition users and provide customisable real time data to every one onboard, on their personal devices.  No more shouting at the navigator!  The data you need, when and where you need it.  On your wrist, on your phone or on a tablet.

For more infromation check out Campbell's website at fieldyachting.com

Please use this subforum for any questions, comments or experiences with this tool.

Re: RaceData - Expedition Data on your phone or watch

Hello all.

I just loaded the RaceData3 bridge for apple watch to my Mesa 3.

Looks highly legible on my used iwatch (7?) running the latest iOS version. With the subscription one could easily end up with far too much info!

I did have to manually set a rule for the port to be used on my Dell latitude.  But, the Mesa (which will be the primary device to run Exp) automatically set the rule through the Microsoft defender app.

It does not look like one can control start features, ping marks or advance the mark from the watch interface.  Or am I missing the proper channels in the Instruments tab?

First race is tomorrow so should be interesting to learn the interface.

The watch does not have the command sending features that the phone App does, by design.

Look forward to some feedback!

Re: RaceData - Expedition Data on your phone or watch

Used the RD3 app yesterday in our first race of the year. It works very well and it was really nice to have all the data I wanted on my wrist rather than carrying the tablet or pulling out a handheld device.

In the last 10 years or so I've been using an ipad, iphone and for the last year a Mesa tablet in the cockpit. Yesterday, I ran the pre start data off the tablet, then placed it in a line bag in the back of the boat and used the iwatch for the remainder of the race, just advancing the marks on the tablet as needed.  It was great having clear legible data on my wrist.

Downsides?  It rained all the way upwind to the finish and the iwatch does not like the rain. (I have an old version).
Battery life was not very good for the watch.  Again, old...

So, I am now shopping for a new watch.  Welcome any suggestions on a good watch, android or ios.

Re: RaceData - Expedition Data on your phone or watch

Campbell had a selection of nice watches at Mets.

Pixel watches, https://store.google.com/us/product/pixel_watch_4

Not using an Apple watch means you don't need the app, which might be good.
