Expedition - which charts?

Hi all

I am looking for a new charting system for my Hallberg 44. I had enjoyed the benefits of a Transas Navi Sailor system for more than 20 years on various yachts. But after a lightning strike I had to move on as Transas would not supply me anymore with parts given my vessel is less than 100 meters long…

Right now I have a Zeus S as stop-gap solution to interface with my H5000 system, but the software is - even in Version 2 - a disgrace. So I am looking again into getting a PC-based system. Expedition is on the short list.

I am writing to get some advice on the charts situation. My understanding is that C-Map is phasing out third-party support (the Discover X charts look excellent on the Zeus S, which is the only bright spot on this disappointing device). I have recently used Navionics in the US, but the coarsely rastered depth charts and fonts look like 1980. S-57 would be great, but I understand that these charts need to be rented, stop working (not only updating) after the rental term has expired, and are hugely expensive to buy for larger regions. To be clear, I do not need any gimmicks (great, traditional charting is what I am looking for), and it‘s sufficient for me to update my charts every 1-2 years. (Region: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Poland, Netherlands, etc.)

How do you address these issues for you? Any insights would be appreciated!

Many thanks!
Nils

Re: Expedition - which charts?

Navionics are cheaper than S-57 from (eg) Chartworld.

S-57 charts won't stop working if they aren't updated, but you will get warning messages saying they have expired.

There are freely available Dutch ENCs, see the Exp web site.

Re: Expedition - which charts?

Nils, you may find David Burch's site of interest if you are looking at S-57/S-63 charts. The following has links to videos about buying and downloading S-63 charts from Chartworld and how to use them in Expedition

I use a mixture of Navionics, raster (UKHO derived) and S-63
