Laptop Port Connection Capability

Hi All,

I am wondering if I can connect both the ethernet connection from my B&G Edge and a USB connection from a Digital Yacht iKonvert (for AIS), together with power for the laptop, through an adapter like a Belkin 6-in-1 MultiPort? The idea is to have just a single USB-C cable running to the laptop, with everything else nicely tucked away out of the way.

Thanks in advance

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

I do exactly that on the CF33 tablet with a USBC dongle thingy.

Exp still shows the Ethernet, and usb connections just the same. Network 0 and comm7.

Thanks @rvsail!

I'm off to Amazon now!

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

After a wander around the aisles of Amazon, I now have a USB-C dongle thing that connects the ethernet from the B&G Edge processor together with the USB-A from a Digital Yacht iKonvert and combines these together into the USB-C connection for my laptop. The iKonvert is recognised as Com 3 in Exp, and the Edge on Network 0.

All seems to work fine, but upon closer inspection, when the iKonvert is connected, I get a strange 'flick' in some of the data - most notable in heel angle where the actual measured value momentarily 'flicks' +89° to the actual measured heel). Unplugging the USB-A from the multi-connector, the data 'flick' stops - but so does the AIS inputs.

I am wondering if this is some form of data conflict happening and if there a network setting adjustment I should make to avoid this?

Tbh - I personally have never had the best experience with this particular iKonvert, so I am swapping it for an Actisense NGX-1. I understand that the iKonvert's are generally considered quite reliable, so I am thinking this is an outlier, but still I can't rely on it to work reliably. Maybe this will be the fix?

Thanks in advance for the ideas!

*Edit - thinking about this some more, would a baud rate change in the settings for Com 3 enable only the AIS data to be received via this port?

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

I have a similar setup using a Actisense NXG-1 for NMEA 2000 and Hurcules Websocket.
Make sure you go into the Actisense menu on Exp and shut off all feeds except for GPS and AIS.
This solved my issues similar to what you are seeing.

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

Thanks @Black Dog

You have triggered my memory and I've checked the manual for the iKonvert. I have always used it in 'Raw' configuration as it used to supply all data (N2K + AIS) to Exp. Now with the B&G Edge installed I only want AIS, and looking in the manual I see some dip switch setting which would limit the data it flows. I'll have a play to see if this works, but more out of curiosity as I am waiting for an NGX to be delivered to address some of the other issues I have experienced with it over the years.

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

Is there a drop down menu for the IKonvert in Exp when you select it in the EXP instrument selection page?
This is where I can select what feeds i want to bring into Exp from the NMEA stream.

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

You just want the DIP switches set for NMEA 2000 RAW data.

You filter for AIS messages in Exp.

Re: Laptop Port Connection Capability

Thanks Both,

I'll leave the dip switch settings and look for something in the Exp menu's when I am next onboard and connected to the network.
