Replacement Radar options

Context: primarily cruising, old Swan, sailing English Channel and French Atlantic coast. Radar primarily for collision avoidance and poor visibility pilotage.

I’m looking to replace my radar this season. I don’t have, nor do I really want, an MFD on deck. I’m leaning towards a furuno radar (DRS4DNXT) for its full ARPA, and reliability having read that navico’s halo domes have some reliability and water penetration issues. Also the existing old furuno dome is mounted to a spreader with an integrated (welded and anodised) mounting bracket which has the same fixing hole pattern as the new furuno.

I'm starting to wonder if my best plan is to run the radar straight to the pc that runs Exp below and use Remote Desktop on a tablet to get a radar display on deck. I assume that Nick doesn’t have the time or inclination to offer furuno radar integration in exp (and the Navico integration doesn’t offer MARAPA, let alone ARPA), and am considering running tz navigator with the radar option on the same PC - that gives me full ARPA and a big screen, with RDP to a tablet on deck. If I were to do that could I publish my instrument data from exp via a network port and read it into Tz? Exp would remain my primary tool and manage to complex mix of instrument protocols, TZ just as a radar display, but it needs position, heading etc.

Is this over complex? Would I be better off running a dedicated furuno mfd (bulkhead space is an issue) or going with the Navico radar? Thoughts, opinions and experience very welcome…

Re: Replacement Radar options

How important is ARPA/MARPA?

I believe the Navico SDK supports both, but I haven't looked at it (or ever used it on a boat).

Re: Replacement Radar options

Sorry to be slow, I’ve been offline for a few days. When short handed or cruising, I’ve used ARPA a fair bit in busy traffic areas, especially crossing shipping lanes. AIS is obviously a huge help these days but doesn’t help much with fishing boats and the like. Supporting ARPA in Exp would certainly be a big influence on my decision. You even contemplating the work is fantastic.

Hardware reliability questions and the mounting hole locations remain, but it would be much simpler being able to use a single software solution.
