Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

I have a bit of a hodge-podge system, but I can't seem to get any of it to talk to Expedition.

I have:
-Raymarine Axiom 9 MFD
-Raymarine RS150 GPS
-Airmar DX900+ (Speed, Temp, Depth, Pitch, Roll)
-Garmin GND10 talking to a Nexus Server (NMEA0183 Compass & Wind Data coming into the Nexus Server)

I am running a new ASUS Windows 10 laptop, and I have tried connecting it to the GND10 (NexusRace Software installed on laptop), I have tried connecting the laptop to the USB port on the back of the Axiom, and I have tried a wireless connection directly to the Axiom's WiFi hub...

...but nothing comes up in Expedition. If I go to Instruments and click Reconnect, it asks me for a confirmation, but then nothing changes. If I click on "Number of Network Connections" the number 1 appears in the field.

Several of these forums have indicated that Expedition should just "see" the connection, but that does not seem to be happening.

I've been poking on this for a week.

Any thoughts?

Does it say Open or Closed at the top left of the connection page?

If you are trying to use the same connection as the Nexusrace software, only one app can open a serial port at a time.

What did you select as the instrument type?

Here are a couple of screenshots:

The first one is looking at serial COM port 3 which is what I use to connect NexusRace to the GND 10. Not sure if I was supposed to change the boat number; in any case, it says open, but "Wake" doesn't do anything, and I can't tell if I am getting any data over that or not. My major concern about going through the GND 10 is that when I use the Nexus Race software, it can't see the GPS data coming over the NMEA 2000 network from my RayStar 150.

The second screenshot is me trying to get data using the WiFi network in the Axiom MFD. I am using the IP address that is listed when I click the question mark. I have no clue which choice I should be making in the instruments list.

I am assuming that you really only need to connect by one of these two methods, but I have been trying both methods.

I am trying to use both your Help Doc and Oatley's e-Book, but there are numerous differences. When I try to select which instruments to use with the COM 3 serial approach, "Garmin GND 10" is the only option. With the Network approach, I get a long list of options for instruments, but I don't see NMEA 2000, AIS, or anything Raymarine-ish other than TackTick. Not sure what is the best option there.

Thank you for your help!

Re: Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

Set the boat to Boat 0 in the GND10 window. Always use boat zero unless you have a requirement for a second boat in Exp.

You probably only need one network port?

I don't know anything about the Axiom. You can see the data coming into Exp by clicking the Raw data button. If if is sending NMEA 0183, just select that at the instrument type.

Re: Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

I have now set the number of network connections to 1.

In my settings for COM 3, I set Boat to 0. Garmin GND 10 is selected for Instruments, and both Use GPS data and Validate checksums are checked.

Wake seems to do nothing and Raw Data is grayed out and un-click-able. I tried closing the window, clicking the Reconnect icon at the top of the window, and then checking the Instruments page, but nothing changed.

I feel like I am missing something simple...

Don't worry about Wake. The raw data button is not enabled for GND10 as the data isn't human readable.

I have just tested with a GND10 here and all works as expected.

Make sure you aren't running NExus server at the same time.

Can you see any other data in (eg a number box) such as bsp?

Re: Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

I had to run away from the boat. Just to check. From cold start:

-Fire up Instruments, including GND 10
-Launch Expedition with USB cable from GND 10 already plugged in
-Do I need to click "Reconnect" or does it automatically talk to the GND 10?
-I should be checking for data under the tab that has fields for boatspeed (bsp), wind, etc.
-Where can I check to see if I am receiving GPS data. There is a GPS option as one of the "Window" options, is that the best place?
-Will the AIS data come through the NMEA 2000 system into the GND 10?

Thanks again for all of your help. It is great to be making progress!

Re: Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

Maybe just use a number box window to start with. You can display almost anything in these - bsp, latitude, depth etc.

You should never need the reconnect button. Exp will automatically connect with the last settings used.

The GND10 doesn't know about AIS data.

Re: Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

I will try that tomorrow.

Do you think this would all just be much easier if I just picked up an Actisense NGT-1 or a wireless DigitalYacht module and plugged that into my NMEA 2000 backbone? Would that give me everything including the data coming into the GND10 from the Nexus Server?

Many thanks.

Re: Complicated Network (Axiom, Nexus, FDX, GND10); Nothing in Expedition

The NGT-1 is probably a better solution as you will then seamlessly get AIS data too.

The GND should work for the basic data. I don't know why not in thise case, but they did go through several firmware releases.
