On my way to a mark

If I am; a) sailing toward an active mark, which variable, shows my VMG toward the active mark? Is it VMG? b) if I am sailing with no active mark, what does VMG reflect?

Thanks

Re: On my way to a mark

a) VMC = Velocity made good on Course (or to next mark)

If you don't have an active mark VMC  will show __ (blank)

VMG will always show Velocity made good to weather as a + and Velocity made good downwind i.e. If the wind is 180 and you sail 180 at 13 (I know impossible) your VMG will read +13

If you sail 000 at 13kts with the wind at 180 your VMG will read -13

If you sail 090 at 13kts with the wind at 180 your VMG will read 0 (never getting to weather)
etc

Re: On my way to a mark

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

Is there a list of the variables somewhere, with a brief explanation of what each does?

I am currently puzzling over, tack/gybe time loss and polar course to steer.

I can guess what each means, but I would rather know.

Re: On my way to a mark

Appendix A in the Help document has many.
Some are broken down further throughout the Help doc... you can Search or ListTopic for these.
I find opening a NumberBox and then activating Playback/Simulate can often offer some clarity

If you want an outside source check out http://www.bandg.com/academy or http://www.ockam.com/  they often offer some pretty technical details of various terms.
Cheers
