OK Thanks Nick. I have v9.0.6 is that hideously out of date? Should I try to update it myself or go back to the sales point? Will it incur fees etc to the boat owner?

Well, this isn't Nck, but happy to provide you an answer nonetheless.
Yes, upgrade your software. It wont cost you anything. You can find the software download link on the Expedition site. (Link in post above). It installs cleanly over the existing software and retains your license, your settings etc..

On the Downloads page it says:

The Durabook I'm working with has Windows 7; how likely will I has a 'problem'?

I run Expedition on Windows 7 without any difficulty.
I also run it on Windows XP on the boat. I'd like to upgrade that PC, but probably not feasible.
In general Windows 7 is your best option right now, that error you called attention to is not a common situation, you probably will not encounter it.
Windows 10 works as well, Nick made some changes to ensure support.
Stay away form Windows 8 - that's just a mess.
