What's the point of range circles for marks? Routing thru rocks

When racing, islands are often designated as rounding marks (for example, Bird Island in NSW).
I want to avoid having to insert 5 different marks around the island, just so the routing doesn't take me over land. The reason why is that I'd like to know from the models if it's better to keep sailing well past the island before you tack around it to go home. But adding any sort of mark (sail to, leave to port or otherwise) results in the routing going directly to that mark regardless.
I always have the 'avoid land' box checked, but I don't check the 'avoid land ENC safety depth' because it results in routing errors.
Using race notes doesn't work, the routing will display an error.
Creating a range circle around the mark doesn't seem to do anything (what's the point of this feature?).
Creating chart objects such as rocks, with appropriate range circles, doesn't do anything either.
As a side note, the routing takes us as close as possible to some rocks (eg Bull Rock on the way to Bird Island), say to 6m depth, when I would much prefer to have 15-20m, but it doesn't seem possible to specify this. I've tried changing all the safety/shallow depths to 10m in both ENCs and Navionics within the Chart ribbon, but that has no effect either. I read somewhere that when routing, for the purposes of calculating depth, it uses the built-in Expedition simple world chart. Is it possible to have the routing use ENCs for this calculation?
You can't specify Bull Rock (or any other set of rocks) as a mark 'leave to port / starboard' either, because the routing will take you directly to that mark (when the logical route might be to stay well offshore). I understand that Expedition calculates 'leave to port/starboard' marks by adding or deducting a boat length, so it feels like it's basically a 'sail to' mark but with this added length, therefore I feel designating any marks as 'leave to port / starboard' is useless for offshore racing.

Obviously, we have our eyes on the chartplotter and outside the boat to make sure we're not hitting any rocks, but it would nice to have this built into the routing.

Am I missing something, or have I done something incorrect in the settings?

Thanks so much, I'm very much a rookie

Re: What's the point of range circles for marks? Routing thru rocks

Expedition does not have a depth function in routing, for good reason as well. And range circles are not used either, they are just a graphical tool for, well, viewing range. Use race notes if there are areas you want to avoid, but be aware that some routing resolutions could well step over this.

If you are getting errors with a race not in place, you may well be asking Expedition to do something near impossible.

Expedition leave mark to pt/st does work very well, but only for grid routing.

The routing solution is very powerful, and works very well, but occasionally there are scenarios that throw up some errors and typically it is due to setup of the route, the resolution of the gribs and routing, marks, racenotes etc.
