Hi guys
I just want to check when new GRIBs are available via Saildocs. I've looked at the Saildocs website but I just want someone with bigger brains than me to confirm that my understanding is correct.
GFS
- Model is run every 6 hours (0000 UTC, 0600 UTC, 1200 UTC and 1800 UTC)
- Model is available via Saildocs 4-5 hours after its run (so in Sydney, the 0000 UTC model is available at 1500-1600 AEDT, the 0600 UTC model is available at 2100-2200 AEDT etc)
ECMWF
- Model is run twice a day (0000 UTC and 1200 UTC)
- Model is available via Saildocs 6.5-8 hours after its run (so 1730-1900 AEDT and 0530-0900 AEDT)
RTOFS
- Not sure when the model is run, but it's once a day
- Model is available via Saildocs at 1100 UTC (2200 AEDT) for 3 hr increments, and 1700 UTC (0400 AEDT) for 6 hr increments
I have some more rookie/newbie questions..
- to receive the UKMO GRIB, I assume that I need to download it via PredictWind Offshore subscription, then upload the GRIB into Expedition manually. Is that right? Does anyone know when it's available in AEDT?
- to receive the Mercator model, heck I have no idea. I don't think it's available via Saildocs so I assume it's also via PredictWind Offshore - followup question - when is it available in AEDT?
- is there a way to check whether a new model is available? Or would I just wait until just after the latest stated time to get the model (eg for ECMWF, I'll download it at say 1915 AEDT and 0915 AEDT)
- Franks Weather page says the RTOFS model is available around 1700 UTC - I assume he's referring to the model with 6 hr increments. Should I just be downloading the 6hr increment model and not the 3hr?
- In the Saildocs window that pops up with all the models you want to download, where the options for 'every X hours for X days' etc appear, do I have to make sure that I choose a certain resolution which corresponds with the resolution that is available via Saildocs (I couldn't quite find info on this question on their website)? Or can I choose any resolution (file size questions aside)
- If I select 'Subscribe (email)', does that automatically download the GRIBs as they become available each day? Or is there some sort of additional process for this option?
- I don't have Expedition on the laptop I'm currently typing from, but I recall there's another option to download a currents/ocean data GRIB (I think when you're running a route (in the Optimisation ribbon) and I was wondering when this data is generally available? I've just been selecting that option every time I optimise our route
Thank you so much!

I think you have missed that you can get that data in Exp.
Also see the Expedition weather web page. As well as the times on the web page, Expedition gives the update and update status times of its data.
You can get GFS, ECMWF etc from both Expedition and Saildocs. GFS, UM & ECMWF are all updated 4x daily.
The Expedition server updates a little earlier than Sailddocs.
Exp has Mercator but not RTOFS, Saildocs RTOFS but not Mercator. We haven't added RTOFS as Mercator tends to be better.
For the UM-Global and Access models, you need to get it from the Exp grib server. Note that UM and Access won't meet rule 41 for most races as they aren't freely available.
