I have been setting up a new nav laptop for use on smaller boats that might not have reliable instrument package to hook into, will still be powerful for routing and nav as long as I have a GPS source. I can see the GPS gets a fix and is sending data through the manufacturer provided GPS software but when I try to connect it to Expedition as GPS source no data is coming through. I tried to reconnect but nothing. Looking at the raw data it sees nothing.
guessing there is an issue with a virtual COM port? if I can't get this type of setup working what other standalone GPS setups work well and are recommended? unfortunately I have a race to navigate tomorrow so hoping to get the USB option going...

I had the same setup before I bought my Orca to have GPS on the N2K network.
I have a USB gps puck.
-check to see in the manufacturer's software that you have incoming data. Check the number of the com port
-CLOSE the software. Only one software can connect to a serial port
-open Exp and open the instruments. Select the same com port
-see with Raw data you have data incoming
-after this, double check you have the correct GPS selected as source in the instruments window. Maybe Exp waits the position from somewhere else.

Make sure you set that port as the GPS source in Exp.
If there is still an issue, make sure you have GGA selecte in the Rx list for that port.
