I don't think the serial events has changed, so it is probably more likely to be a hardware fault I think.
You need to send the site code. I send a key on a public forum though.

Hi. Recommended backup of existing install prior to upgrading to 12.x? Folders etc. We've got some old data we want to preserve. Cheers

You can back up the data folder (it is probably a good idea to do that occasionally).
The main thing that won't be able to be read by older Exp 11 is the mark database.

I can do a mark and routes export out of 11 and then import back into 12, yes? Cheers

Expedition 12 can read the format from v11.
Just Expedition 11 can't read marks databased from v12.

Great with a new major release of Expedition!
Could you share some screenshots of the new UI, like the new Route, Tracking and AIS windows.
Both to increase interrest in general but also to help me motivate an upgrade from Expedition 11 bought in 2022
(From my understanding I cannot install 12 seperately in parallell on the same machine to try it out myself?)

Not at the same time - they are different apps.

Thanks for the quick reply. Does the upgrade license payment cover 12.0.9 for both X64 and 4D versions?
Assuming 16 of RAM what is the recommended CPU? (i3, i5 or i7 or equivalent)

Yes, they use the same key.
The more CPU the better, but it depends what you are doing. For optimal routing, more performance cores helps.
