ECMWF ENS

I recently noticed the above data available in the WxData Expedition menu. Not seen that before, so not sure it is new or silly me never noticed that. I recall on a recent course with Will Oxley where he mentioned this type of data would cost north of $150K per year.

Am I getting things mixed up? Any help clarifying this would be appreciated.

Re: ECMWF ENS

EC started making a subset of their data freely available earlier this year. You can get the HRES and Ensemble data from Exp.

It is of debatable extra value though. The resolution is at 0.4 degrees, but more importantly it is available very late, only just before the next runs of the other models. For exammple, the 00z runs for various models are available on the grib server by about:

0310 ICON
0410 GFS
0430 GDPS
0450 UM
0710 EC

The 06z ICON is available from 0910, which is only 2 hours later.

The other issue is the 06 and 18z runs only go to H90, so if you use it for more than 3 1/2 day forecasts, it can be even older.
