Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

I read the threads related to how it is possible to connect to B&G H5000 Hercules, but I need a confirmation for points 1, 2 and 3.

1) Is this the product ”USG-2 NMEA 0183 USB Converter” (https://www.actisense.com/products/usg-2-nmea-0183-converter/) that I should acquire?

2) In order to connect the USG-2 NMEA 0183 USB Converter ...

... to B&G H5000 Hercules ...

... should the yellow cable „RX A/+” be connected to pin 2 ”TX_B(+)”: RX to TX + to + and A to B?

3. Is any driver/software necessary?

Thank you.

Hello, if you want to connect your pc to the H5000, why not just use the (advised) ethernet cable?

Re: Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

As I read on the threads here on Expedition forum, the connection trough Ethernet is not recommended. Probably someone can confirm or infirm, but at least this is the information that I found.
Forgot to mention that the setup is not for cruising, but for racing and is for connecting Expedition to H5000, not just to connect a PC to H5000.
Regarding the ”advised ethernet cable”, I see that in the B&G installation manual is written for the connection to PC: ”Deckman via serial port”.

Regarding the use of the ethernet port, the H5000 Installation manual indicates that it should be used to access the webserver of the H5000 for its setup, calibration and diagnosis. It does not mention that ethernat can be used for data communication between H5000 and Expedition/Deckman.

Re: Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

I don't think anybody is suggesting that NMEA 0183 is a preferred way to connect to H5000.

I think most users are just using ethernet to make a websocket connection to H5000. In some cases, the ethernet out of H5000 goes to a wifi device, and the websocket connection is over wifi.

some people are using the NGT-1 NMEA 2000 interface to the NMEA 2000 backbone...

Because the H5000 is on the NMEA 2000 network, it is possible to get a lot of what you want from the H5000 over that interface, but this is not the best way to do it.

If you have an NGT-1 N2K interface, the best thing to do is to use that to get GPS and AIS off the N2K network, and use the websocket connection (etehrnet or wireless) to get the H5000 data.

Re: Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

@us7070 thank you very much for your response.

I have a wifi rooter inside the boat connected to the H5000 Hercules trough ethernet
Inside the boat I have a Panasonic FZ-G1 Toughpad with wifi and ethernet port, on which I have installed Expedition. Trough wifi it is connected to a Vulcan chartploter and trough ethernet it is connected to the rooter.
I also have a Panasonic FZ-M1 Toughpad on deck that connects trough a wifi RDP connection to FZ-G1 .
Except for the boat speed sensor that is analogic, all the other are connected to NMEA2000 network.
Now I want to know what else should I buy in order to connect the FZ-G1 to H5000 / system in order to receive all the necessary data needed by Expedition.
On a Nexus system I had all the data coming trough USB.

Ok, so I should acquire NGT-1 N2K interface and to connect it to NMEA2000 network trough a T junction.
Anything else?

I saw now also this thread: https://expedition.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=1346 that is pointing me to an additional question.
Nick mentions: Obviously you need to tell Exp not to use wind data from the NGT-1 and not to use GPS data from the H5000 websocket..Is this correct also for the NMEA2000 wind sensors such as WS720 with interface?

Re: Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

Yes, you need the NGT-1 for AIS data.

It also makes sense to get GPS data from an NGT-1 if you have it. In this case, you would tell Exp to ignore GPS data from the H5 and ignore all PGNs you don't want from the NGT-1.

You want all the instrument data (eg wind) to come from the H5000

@Nick, Thank you very much for clear explanation. I highly appreciate the support.
B&G manual for H5000 is misleading.
I just realized that the information I read was from sailing anarchy forum, not from the expedition forum and it was from 2015.

If the compass is a DGPS one, such as Simrad HS75 (https://www.simrad-yachting.com/en-gb/simrad/type/compasses/hs75-gnss-compass-f5551ca6/), then the heading is computed based on the differential position of two GPS antenna.

Should then the Heading be taken also from the NGT-1 and ignored from H5000?

Re: Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

I would probably still use the H5000 source.

Re: Connecting to B&G H5000 Hercules RX to TX + to + and A to B?

iurie - did you get it to work?

you should have no problem making a websocket connection between the FZ-G1 and the H5000, which will give you everything except AIS

This should be possible with either wifi or the ethernet cable

in the network setting, you need to use the ip# of the H5000 processor - usually 192.168.0.2 i think

generally exp autofills all the fields correctly
