IMOS (Australian "Integrated Marine Observing System") provides, amongst a wide range of ocean data, their current models for a large area around Aus/NZ and into the Indian Ocean in netcdf format. This is the same data used to generate the images at https://oceancurrent.aodn.org.au/sst.php
Description and access to data formats here: https://imos.org.au/data/about-the-australian-ocean-data-network/data-management-standards-and-policies/imos-netcdf-conventions
Data here: https://portal.aodn.org.au/search
Current data is under "Physical Water / Sea Surface Height / Anomaly -> Gridded Sea Level / Near Real Time"
Download as "Un-subsetted NetCDF"
If you dig down, the current data archive is available directly (large files of whole area): https://thredds.aodn.org.au/thredds/catalog/IMOS/OceanCurrent/GSLA/NRT/2024/catalog.html
It'd be nice to have direct access to this data from within expedition with the netcdf feature. At the moment, I download the netcdf whole-area file and convert with the UCAR cdo tools, mapping the ucurr and vcurr to UCUR and VCUR respectively in an output grib, then load into Expedition.
Slow, awkward, and I don't have the capability set up on the boat laptop.
would be neat!
There's probably other data of use for racing - such as the HF radar sites and drifters.
