Recs for Dampening values

Hello,

Getting NMEA2000 boat data from an NGT-1 connected to a port in my system, plugged into my laptop, and my numbers boxes are quite jumpy: heading, cog, TWS/TWA, AWS/AWA. I understand setting them higher than 8s or so isn't ideal, but i had them at about that the other day and it was still pretty jittery. Is the "boxcar" method of dampening recommended for a smoother presentation of data? I'd love to have similar speeds as what i'm seeing on my raymarine axiom chartplotter and B&G triton displays
