Linking sail images to log files ?

Is there an elegant means to interface a Go-pro or similar camera to store rig pictures & associate with log files?

Ideally be able to trigger at intervals of 30 secs or so and then retrieve when assessing a "test" by identifying as a channel item.

Re: Linking sail images to log files ?

Yes, but elegant wouldn't be the word I'd use .....
I use other software (KND Sailing Performance) to create a test file from the whole Logfile.  The result for a days's sailing is maybe 800-900 performance samples, on which one can do statistical things in Excel.
In this I've embedded such images as are informative of that test and time.
All very obscure.

Re: Linking sail images to log files ?

So basically matching up time stamps ? I suppose if you were running video  cameras you could just go to the point of interest and grab frame shots for documentation/analysis.

With the Garmin it looks like stamping a few N2k values into frame via ANT+ might make it more tractable.

Haven't found equivalent for GoPro but would assume it's there somewhere with Wifi/Bluetooth.

Any suggestions on sail shape analysis tools? The Bsgdev freeware seems an attractive starting point. http://www.bsgdev.com/CMS3/index.php/menuproducts/sailpack-vision

Yeah, just attach the image to any close data row.  Files get big fairly quickly; using Excel Hyperlinks is another way in a trusted environment.
I've used sail shapes tools for having conversations with sailmakers, esp e.g. shape in new A3 compared to old A3 or A5 - but you need to be well inside their production process before it is an option.

Re: Linking sail images to log files ?

Looking into the "settings--> Alarms" feature, it would appear that I could set conditions such as PolarBSP% > 90 (and ideally multiple AND conditions such as GPS time sec = *5 (to get every 5,15,25 seconds or 10 sec intervals)  and use that to trigger an external action such as firing a shutter release.

When I try to setup an alarm, the "action" field takes me to a file loader. I'm not finding anything on what that file loader should be doing? It would be sensible to have a script that runs when the alarm conditions are fulfilled.

Alternatively the "Expedition Events" are a means of hardwiring input channels to buttons or switch closures. The Reverse feature may not exist, but would be useful to be able to setup conditions with Boolean expressions similar to alarm or alternating channels and use it to send an output digital value to a port to then fire a shutter, or other external trigger.

Re: Linking sail images to log files ?

Wow.  Sheldon, say all that again in English?  And you say your ship battles with J24s?  To quote the old joke, you aren't coming here for the sport are you.
I suspect that the method you propose will overwhelm you in data in about an hour.  I'd focus more on instrument calibration, polars tuning and crossovers first ....

Re: Linking sail images to log files ?

Duncan,

My noble vessel rates PHRF same as the J-24's around here, but fortunately,  they generally sail in a 1D class with the Merit 25's. The reason for asking about automating a shutter release from Exp is that I can conceptually set the conditions in advance and not have to remember to trigger the shutter when in the groove, or paw through thousands of images from a time lapse. I have a pretty high bandwidth for data, and an old slow boat that is not conducive to sparring with sport boats, so with a new crew, we do what we can in advance and after the fact to analyze where there's room to improve.

here's a typical course: we start between OYC_X and the flag on the deck off the 2nd Floor YC bar.
Mark Rnd Latitude       Longitude    Bear Range nm
OYC_1 P 37 47.566n 122 16.760w 288° 0.87
OYC_6 P 37 47.156n 122 15.865w 106° 0.82
OYC_2 S 37 47.327n 122 16.149w 294° 0.28
OYC_X S 37 47.105n 122 15.821w 117° 0.34
OYC_7 S 37 46.826n 122 15.101w 102° 0.63
OYC_5 S 37 46.943n 122 15.610w 273° 0.42
OYC_X S 37 47.105n 122 15.821w 301° 0.23
OYC_1 P 37 47.566n 122 16.760w 288° 0.87
OYC_X S 37 47.105n 122 15.821w 108° 0.87
OYC_7 S 37 46.826n 122 15.101w 102° 0.63
OYC_X S 37 47.105n 122 15.821w 282° 0.63

Bit different from racing the Southern Ocean, but it lets me get back to the desk by 0800 on Thursdays.

Sheldon
I sail big boats but also Historic 10' Skiffs, see http://nswtens.weebly.com/ and laugh ....
0.9 NM mile legs I get.
Your Crossover chart would be interesting ....

Re: Linking sail images to log files ?

Lets just say I have not yet figured out if i should indicate Reefs and Mizzen status in it, and how to code that
e.g. J1--> J1R-->J2-->J3R, J3Z etc

We carry a
D1=Drifter
J1=160%
J2=low hoist 135% (1962 miter cut, narrow panel Brown thread, Ted Hood hand written serial...)
J4=storm jib
A1
Mizzen Staysail
Spinnaker Staysail
Main with two reefs
Mizzen with one reef

Have a 95% blade J3 on order.
old trysail.
threw out the 1962 era Cross cut chutes with wire luffs, and 180% Light/heavy genoa (boat was home ported  on Long Island Sound)
