In one interview I read this morning Frank Cammas is reported to have wondered if the use of different routing software was the cause of the French boats heading for the French coast (Apivia led the IMOCAs and made quite a lay line call somewhere south west of Jersey) whilst the British boats stuck to the UK coast. Might this be a Adrena vs Expedition question, or is it more likely driven (my hunch) by the short handed IMOCA crews optimising for long legs, and thinking they could get a tidal gain in the Alderney race?

Hi,

I'm a UK south coast sailor, who cruises more than races these days, and is a bit of a data nerd. I have a squid subscription, which includes tidal grib data. Would I see any benefits from buying the proudman data? There's plenty of other things I can throw the money at (I own a 30 year old Swan - there's no shortage of ways to spend money on that). I presume that the grib data might actually be more accurate predictions of flows as it can account for atmospheric effects, but presume the main benefit is in being able to project further ahead than the 10 day grib data set.

Does anyone understand the relative merits of the two approaches?

I find the 4D much harder to use than the older c-map.

That's interesting. I've got to prefer it because of the ease of flipping between raster and vector charts, and online updates but don't find it that different. What's the appeal of Max for your use -am I missing something?

My experience making that move earlier in the year was that even with a pretty old laptop running Win10 was that it ran well - faster if anything. I suspect better use of hardware acceleration helped. That said the C-Map Max performance wasn't as bad as you describe. My boat PC (the only Windows machine I own...) is an old i5 (2557M) 1.7GHz with 6 GB, if that helps.

I re-entered the password and all was well. Strange that it has somehow got corrupted, but an easy fix. Thanks Nick.

Unlikely to be Pwd, I don’t think I’ve ever changed it for squid and it’s free of special characters (hardly an exercise in good infosec!). I’ll have another go later when I get back to my laptop and report back. If it’s a squid issue it’s odd that their application worked fine for the download.

Hi,

I might just be me but I get a 'Grib Download Error' dialog reporting a 'Bad Request' and there is a 'Syntax error or a required argument is missing'. Downloading via the squid application works fine. Asking Exp to update models also generates an error reporting an 'Unintelligible request. Unable to obtain data.'

Anyone else seeing this?

I've an H2000 Hercules system too. Exp works really well with it using the serial link (B&G H-Link) and this allows you to pump Exp channels back into the B&G to display on deck. I'd run exp on the computer below decks and then either mirror the screen on you tablet as others have suggested, or run exp on the tablet as well using the exp install below to stream the data on deck via some wifi network. I've not done it but I believe exp is designed to allow you to relay data in just this manner. The wifi network should be easy on a mini (unless there's lots of carbon) - you might well just be able to use the below deck PC as the access point if it has wifi hardware.

A bit of thread drift: what is Vesper mode for? I've a vesper AIS and had a look at the mode's settings but didn't get to the bottom of it - I couldn't see anything much in the manual either. The AIS (XB8000) is a great bit of kit BTW, that is one software update away from being brilliant (if there were more management and translation options available on the N2K to 0183 interface it would be perfect).
