Hi, my solution to this is to just send an average (damped) TWD to a display. Then it is trivial to compare this number to your current TWD. You can choose the damping time depending on the conditions. 10-15 min is common for w/l racing.

Cheers,
Will.

It all works well Nick. There is no need to over complicate this. The job of the navigator is to interpret information. My vote is to leave as is.

Hi All,
I've just finished and posted a new training video to my web site. It's a change from the e-book format! The video is about 2 hours in length and focuses on how to use Expedition to prepare for a race using the Bermuda race as the example. You can find it at www.willoxley.com/videos

Enjoy!

Hi, I've been adapting to this Covid-19 world and spent the time at home looking at different ways of providing information and training on Race Navigation. After a YouTube video on Historical routing analyses (See https://youtu.be/kA8H25VUE_4) and, while in the middle of some online training sessions with Wapala Training, here is the first in a series of articles.
I've been updating the Race Navigation Book but this is a big task so I thought I would break it down into bite size chunks and then publish these as they are ready. It is lots of work and back and forth with Nick making sure I have got it all correct but now I have finished the first one and I am really happy with it. I actually learnt quite a bit about the start package myself! I'm charging US9.99 per article which hopefully you think is good value!

The first one is about using Expedition software for race starts. The start package has improved greatly since my first book so I have fully updated the starting chapter with the latest information and more figures and tips and tricks. You can buy it now on Amazon. Hope you like it!

I have just got a Quatix 6 and so far I really like it. It’s got a number of features that the 5 did not have. These include heart rate reading while swimming, the chart feature, and an 02 oxygen sats feature.
You can get all the expedition data Onto the watch using  an actisense USB converter and some Garmin displays which have the ANT protocol. This is similar to what some of the TP52’s do.

Hi, my understanding is that you only get the standard NMEA2000 sentences. None of the custom channels work this way. So it is a bit of a disappointment.

Hi, Out of interest this happened to me twice today with 11.0.9. I am using H5000 through websocket and we did two practice starts today. On the first one I assumed it was me but on the second I was suspicious so checked out the forum and development site and found this thread. I used the normal Start, timer button to initialise the timer. Thanks, Will. Essentially an expedition crash on start time....

Hi,
Further to Nick's comments, I just went and registered with Chartworld and then, using only the Expedition user permit, was able to purchase and download several charts for Tahiti. You also receive a PERMIT.TXT file and I imported this and it all seemed very easy. My other ENC charts remain. You can buy charts for a minimum of 3 months and this might be the solution to up to date charts for key areas...
Cheers,
Will
