Technical Q&A » Nexus Instruments data transfer using TBS/CAD/CFD data fields » 8/18/2019 5:52 am

On one boat that I race GPS data is obtained from a Garmin 1040 GPS/Chart Plotter that, for one reason or another, will only transmit COG in magnetic, which forces us use magnetic throughout our navigation systems. In that boat's Nexus system I use the FDX connection and in order to get the Nexus magnetic HDG to agree with the Expedition magnetic HDG I set the correct magnetic variation in Nexus and then set an opposite value in Expedition (Exp cals - Hdg [check the box then set the value]).

My thinking (quite possibly flawed) was that Expedition was obtaining the magnetic variation value from the chart and combining / compounding it with the magnetic HDG obtained from Nexus (which might be incorrectly identified by Nexus in the transmission) to produce a magnetic HDG with a doubled magnetic variation.

After performing the massage described above I check to insure that Nexus and Expedition are producing the same magnetic HDG and then check that number against what is shown with a handbearing compass.

There is probably a better way of dealing with the issue and I am open to suggestions which might reflect an accurate conceptual understanding.

That’s huge Nick. I am locked on now.

Thanks.

Hey Ernie,
Thanks. I thought that might have been it but sometimes I am unable confirm that. If that is your understanding then I will keep crunching until I understand how that works out.
Again, thanks.

I am ashamed to acknowledge that after all this time using this stuff I still do not know what is quantified by the parameter "DFS" in Expedition Race Tracking.

Help!

Technical Q&A » Sending Target BSP, Polar BSP and other from expedition to B&G H3000 » 6/14/2019 9:10 am

My notes and recollection concerning the H3000 emphasize two "operating modes" each with a different Serial and Network port settings in Expedition and each with a different Communications Port Configuration setting in the H3000 CPU.

Polar data can be sent to the CPU from Expedition only if the "Communication Port Configuration" in the CPU is set to "1-0-2" (H-Link). If you are sending Bearing To Waypoint data to the CPU then you must necessarily be using "1-5-2" (NMEA) as that configuration because that BRW cannot be sent in the H-Link mode.

If I am not mistaken then the H3000 Communication Port Configuration setting is accessed through this path: CALIBRATION / OTHER CALIBRATION / MISC / COMM CONFIG.

A note: after you have set the configuration it may be necessary to shut down the B&G and repower it to insure that the new Communication Port Configuration has been "accepted" by the CPU.

After you have transferred the polars then it will be necessary to reset the Communications Port Configuration to "1-0-2" (NMEA) in order to transfer "real time" BRW data again.

I hope this helps and I apologize if this is something that you have already handled and I did not discern it in the thread.

As a user of Race Tracking in larger fleets such as the Chicago-Mac (300+) I am thankful for this most instructive post as it "restores" a capability that I "lost" when Expedition-assigned database numbers were phased out several versions ago; specifically, the ability to rapidly delete individuals or groups of boats after a YB updated download.

Additionally, I would welcome the implementation of HL's recommendations concerning
1) re-labeling of some of the buttons in the Boat Editor and
2) enabling greater flexibility in the coloring options.

Thanks HL for illustrating the expansion of the unlabeled void in your YouTube video.

Get it.
It's like Expedition in that the more you use it the better you get with it and the more you come to like it.
Also, incident to acquiring proficiency with MA you come to get better at accessing sources of WX information and developing a sense of the strength and weaknesses of various gribs.
I have had the good fortune to speak to two of the developers at the arm's length and they are committed to making MA increasingly user-friendly and to that end they actively solicit user input.
Get in on the ground floor and participate in the discussions that will make it better.

Technical Q&A » Route Leg Disappears At Large Scales in C-Map 4D » 4/24/2019 6:35 am

I finally sprung for a C-Map 4D MAX+ purchase and began operating Expedition 4D (10.10.14 4D) and I am going through the learning processes associated with that transition. Thanks to the excellent instructional materials from Nick and Will Oxley and the Expedition interface with the C-Map store I was able to successfully install C-Map 4D MAX+ charts on the two PCs that I own, although the downloading required ice ages (as I had been warned that it would).

I have run into a problem when zooming close in on a 4D chart in that route legs disappear as the chart scale grows larger. I am working with the C-Map 4D MAX+ EW-D226.43 chart package for "UK, IRELAND AND THE CHANNEL" and I am trying to set up possible marks for the Fastnet. The problem occurs when using the vector or the raster charts This problem does not occur when I try replicate it with US NOAA RNCs.

Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong? Before actually downloading the charts and running Expedition 4D I updated my graphics drivers on both PCs, my house desktop and my boat-to-boat laptop.

Technical Q&A » YB Tracking Gain » 12/03/2018 1:33 pm

Hi Duncan,
If you are referring to Expedition Race tracking based on YB position reports it is my understanding that "Gain" (which can have a negative value to indicate a "Loss") indicates the delta in DMG since the last Race tracking that was compiled by Expedition. I am not sure that if boat handicaps are entered that "Gain" will not indicate the delta in CorrDMG instead of DMG.
To expand a bit; YB does not provide any calculated info along those lines. YB just provides a boat identifier, position, and time in a text file. Expedition massages all of that to develop the information in the Race tracking module.
Hope this helps.

Technical Q&A » Optimal Route Re-Naming - is it gone? » 10/29/2018 12:30 pm

Try this:
1) Click on the "Name" of the route; usually a time.
2) The name should now be in a blue box.
3) Type in the characters of the name that you want.
4) "Tab" away and the new name should stick.
Similar in method to renaming routes and waypoints.
