I’d say best quality and reliability would be in the FTDI devices such as USB-RS422-WE-1800-BT or other variants from them. Available through most major resellers as Mouser, Digi-key. Use drivers from https://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm.

Remember obvious thing to use correct protocol: RS232 or RS422 (such as NMEA0183 normally).

Most elegant is to avoid any usb-to-db9 adapter and wire the USB-adapter open-ended straight into the serial device or -feed.

In the end I did a python script creating a list of observations, similar in format to the NDBC bouys.

Using the ViVa observations in Sweden: http://www.sjofartsverket.se/Maritima-Tjanster/ViVa---Vind-och-vatteninformation/ (Sorry, in Swedish only...)

This worked great. No problems.

Has anyone been playing with adding own weather observations?

There are a list of sources in the WxObservations.xml file but the parsing of the downloaded files seems hard-coded (understandibly). There are some pointers early in the xml file but I don't know how to apply them.

The only two option I can see would be
* to add my own items as Bermuda stations, add my own URLs accordingly and output observation according to their syntax
* to emulate what the software WxWorx seems to do but the format for these observations is unknown to me

I am looking for a way to adjust this in a similar fashion as the MyGrib.xml where I have added my own grib server as just another source by editing the xml file.

Does anyone have ideas?

With a Nexus system, I guess it would be tricky to change the heel variable. If it’s not to hard to mount the heel sensor opposite to what it is, then that would solve your problem.

One obvious thing to check is of course that leeway is calculated in the right direction. If signs from heel or wind angles does not follow the normal convention, leeway could easily become inverted to what would be expected.

The easiest way to check this is to time plot heading and course when sailing upwind and ensure that the difference between the headings are smaller than between the two courses. If headings and courses are on either side or North, one tack has to be unwrapped obviously.

Don’t forget that you could use other languages also. I wrote some crude stuff in visual c# and python and that works fine as well...

I shouldn´t have expected anything else that Exp handing vector channels correctly! :-)

That makes Exp calculations for set and drift a good option to me, if instrument system numbers looks questionable.

These are very valid questions. I am sailing on one boat having a H3000 system and the current set and drift calculated is questionable. ...so it would be great to use Expedition numbers if they were better.

However, the fact that the damping of current set and drift is set independently worries me as it indicates that they are damped as two separate numbers. This will exaggarate the current drift. The proper procedure should be using vector averaging (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_of_circular_quantities). Using vector averaging would at least give reasonable numbers even with persistent offsets if using big damping values...

Maybe Nick could clarify how these numbers are handled and computed...
