Bump for upgrade advice:

We will be adding an AIS enabled VHF. Planning to communicate with Garmin GPS via N2K and Expedition via N2K -> ethernet.

Since we are adding N2K, are there any devices (~7") I should consider to replace the troublesome H3000 GFD? The Garmin GNX 120 looks like it should talk with Expedition over N2K w/ custom channels, but only displays a max of 3 items. H5000 GFD has more robust display capability, but is limited to standard N2K sentences.

Are there any devices available that I'm missing?

Thanks Nick, that seems to have been the problem.

I’ve had a similar problem since updating to 11.19.8. No performance hit, but i have had an error message and expedition crashes when trying to modify marks.

“ Unable to save the marks database: C:\ProgramData\Expedition\Marks.dat

Encountered a sharing violation while

accessing

C:\ProgramData\Expedition\Marks.dat “

I have checked Windows preferences on the program data folder, and administrator settings in user management.

Thanks Nick. Sorry for the year-long delayed response.

I downloaded most current ENC's, and the problem is still apparent. However, pan and scale are substantially faster, so nice work on your updates!

Are c-map charts derived from enc's? I saw the note that c-map max will be discontinued. Does the same problem appear in c-map 4d?

I have had trouble with C-map NT charts since installed in 2018. Always thought I had something wrong in settings, but I'm starting to think it is the chart. The problems I experience are common throughout Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Areas with local insets seem fine, but the depths on the greater chart area are wildly incorrect.

Has anyone had similar experience, or am I doing something wrong?

My local area displays normally when zoomed out:

But the chart looks wrong when zoomed in one level:

The ENC chart, for reference, shows the situation correctly:

And for what it's worth, the newest generation of "RevealX" from the chart viewer on the C-map website seems to have trouble with the same area:

Sorry for the late reply to an old thread, I don't stop in much. Thanks for the mention Nick, as the Nav on the 1D35T Chico2, we certianly could not have done it without Expedition! The guys and gals sailed the heck out of the boat as well!!!!

Congrats Hoss I am sure you will have much more Mac success in the future!

Any insight as to how I can predict that a forecast will continue to be wrong would be much appreciated.

And congrats on your win!

Try using the bouy data feature to compare bouy and shore station wind from around the lake with the models in real time. IMO I would throw away a forecast with winds 90 deg off, that would mean you are well ahead or behind a major influencing factor in the model.

Congrats, you guys killed it!

We have an XM/Sirius weather subscription through the Garmin chartplotter, and use this to compare to GRIB's regularly. It can't be imported to Expedition for overlay, but at least we have some reference to reality.

I think the forecasts were probably accurate at some altitude not far above the water, but I wasn't confident enough to plan on the wrong forecast continuing to be wrong. In fact it was, and we would have made better routing decisions if we had known better.

Anyway, congrats again and good luck next year!

HRRR was from NOAA. Didn't realize it was available from saildocs. Will try this next time.

Thanks Nick. I went back to the NAM grib that I downloaded before the race. Sure enough, it was much closer to what we experienced.

For some reason, HRRR was reporting a "link not found" error, and only downloading MSLP.

GLERL is usually the best for the Great Lakes, but wrong in the same way as GFS this time. NDFD was also wrong (as expected, based on GFS).

For what it's worth, I really appreciate the new weather and weather data panels.

It was quite the race!

GFS had the velocity spot-on, and the wind direction exactly 90 degrees off for 80% of the race. The new gribs were confident that the wind direction would be the same as earlier forecasts, so we took a chance and went outside the Manitou's. They continued to be wrong, and we ended up reaching at tighter angles than we hoped.

Needless to say, we didn't win. Obviously, expedition can't accommodate for a wrong forecast.

Any insight as to how I can predict that a forecast will continue to be wrong would be much appreciated.

And congrats on your win!

I use Iridium Go with saildocs.

It's cumbersome, but it works. Iridium requires a phone app, so I download the emailed grib to my phone, and transfer to the computer with a USB cable.

The Iridium can be connected directly to the computer using another paid subscription to xgate, which I have not tried. Others have reported mixed success.

Hope this helps!
