Hi All Mac users (and those who are considering)
With the recent shared C-Map issues, it was nice to see a few other Mac Users.  I thought that I was the only one out here.
Been running Expedition a MacMini since 2015 with BootCamp running Windows 10 as our main boat computer. It's always been fantastic and runs very stable.  When in port, we run on the Mac side for web browsing and basic computing.  We try to only us Windows on this computer for Expedition and on board systems that we need when offshore.  Seems to keep the system cleaner (of course auto updates are all shut down on the Windows side, and we do all of our updating manually dockside).  This set up seems to keep the windows side isolated.
My home "work up" computer is a MacBookPro (Intel 8-core i9) OS 13.0 Ventura, running Windows 10 through Parallels.  I have never been successful in connecting our onboard instruments.  I've often tried to set this up as a backup, but have not been successful in configuring through Parallels, though I have to admit to not spending a lot of time to configure, as when on the boat, I have been focused on the onboard computer.
Last year we ordered a new MacMini with the M1 chip, only to learn that Boot Camp was no longer an option.  Fortunately we were still able to return it and get a new one with the Intel chip.
Wondering if others have been successful in the following set up and if someone can provide their input:
1.  Any luck running an M1 or M2 chip Mac with full instrument integration?.  Please describe the configuration that works best in your environment.
2.  With the Mac Book Pro, I only have USB-C connection ports, what have you found to be the best connectivity to the boat systems?  Ethernet? USB? Wireless options?  Please describe your configurations.

I'm also an Iridium GO! person, and we have had pretty reliable success in getting information on board through this setup through SailMail.  I know that it's slow and patchy and can cause frustr

FOLLOWING!!
Nice to see other Mac users out there.
Experiencing similar issues with C-MAP 4D.
Uninstalling and reinstalling now.

Would it also make sense to start a Mac Users - General Discussions group?  I'll start one if anyone is interested.  It would be helpful to get some input on a few items.

Hello all
I just updated expedition for the reason of accessing the HRRRX (48 hour model).  Works great.  However, now I cannot find any of the ensemble models in NOAA.  Am I missing something?
Is this gone for good?
I've heard that there is a way to get it through Squid, but have not done that yet.  Any other options?
Ensemble is something that I always used for route planning prior to any race and it's a bummer not to have it.
Thank you.

Technical Q&A » Strip Chart freeze » 3/03/2021 9:28 pm

I'm having a situation with Strip chart that I am trying to figure out.  When you open strip chart it has all of the history (up to 6 hours, as long as expedition was running), but it does not record new history onto the charts and is frozen in time.  If I close strip chart and then reopen all of the information is there.
I was getting an error that it was unable to find wmm2020.cof (only wmm2015.cof was in the folder), so I have uploaded the most current wmm.cof file and renamed if wmm2020.cof, and no longer receiving the clock error, but still have the same issue in strip chart.
I also just updated to 11.8.2, and the has not resolved the problem.  Any suggestions?

Thank you Will.
I appreciate the input.  I did go ahead with the c-map 4d and like you said, they look pretty good.  I was not able to find a source for RNCs or ENCs, but should be good to go with the 4D.  I do also have all the up to date paper charts as you recommended.
Thanks again,
Jason

I just uploaded 4D, and didn't realize until it was too late that it said not to update the WorldChart in the C-Map chart loader.  What issues will this cause, and how can I revert back to the original C-Map if necessary?

I am having an issue in that I cannot zoom out further than 30 degrees of latitude.  Is this a related issue with c-map?  Is there a setting to change this to zoom out further?  Worldchart does not seem to have any data any longer.

It's happening the same on 2 different computers.

Hello all

Just wanted to get some opinions on the best resource for charts for the South Pacific and Tahiti for Expedition.

We are preparing for the Transpac Tahiti 2020 race, and want to know the best way to access charts.  I think that C-Map is the best way to go, but wanted to check here first on what you think.  We have not yet loaded Expedition with C-maps but will if it is the best way to go.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance,

Jason

No modifications are needed to the .txt files, you just need to be sure that the boatids file is in the same folder when you import to expedition.

You have to have 2 files in the same folder, I usually make a folder on the desktop for each race.  For instance for last years Caribbean 600 (c6002019) those 2 files are:

c6002019-boatids.txt
c6002019-expedition.txt
You only need to retrieve the boat id file once.   You can request it through saildocs:
http://yb.tl/c6002019-expedition.txt
Once you have both files you can manually import through expedition.
You will also need a second expedition.txt file (typically rewritten each 15, 30, or 60 minutes during a race).  You will overwrite the file in your folder and import to expedition again.  Make sure not to delete the boatids file, it must remain in the same folder.
You also need a weather grid loaded in expedition to create the time in order for the boats to show up.  Remember that some races are delayed through YB so they show up in the past.

Hope that this helps.

Hi 7070

We are on the same page.  I do not have a problem, per se, with XGate working, I have a problem with my expectations of it working more like broadband with IridiumGo! and Expedition.  You had previously stated that the best way for position reports with IridiumGo is though email and the text files, and importing them in through the generic boat tracker in Expedition.  I absolutely agree with this statement, but it would be better if they could be brought directly into Expedition, as when on a network connection.  XGate's claims seem to imply that it does, but I have not found support on this topic.

The problem that I do have is that XGate leads you to believe that IridiumGo! will work directly into Expedition for YBTracking, and I have gotten that to work on occasion, but it is not reliable, and I always seem to go back to the email solution of the location reports and importing them in manually to Expedition.  As Nick states people have had varying levels of success.

I have been looking for someone that has been using this set up reliably over time, and most seem to get to a point and just bite the bullet and go to broadband.  The problem stems from my personal expectations of what I would like for it to do.  I was hoping that I would be able to find someone that has been successful that could share their process, and provide the answers if I am in fact doing something wrong or have the improper settings so that I can fix it.  However, I have not been able to find those people or that person.  Might need to give up on hunting this Unicorn...

With Respect.

jko
