Exp currently has an option to raise a warning (pop-up window + entry in Event list) when a boat with AIS enters a restricted area (race note with the "avoid" flag set). In theory this is a nice feature to be made aware of a race competitor who enters an area not allowed to enter during a race.
However, in the area we sail in this feature has a few shortcomings:
- In most cases the restricted area's in our races are TSS shipping lanes. Therefore there are always commercial ships that will enter the restricted area (and thus raise a warning). In fact, in the the busy environment of the Rotterdam port/English channel there will be many, many warnings raised! Undoable to keep acknowledging them.
- For every boat that enters the restricted area the pop-up needs to be acknowledged. So if you go down below to check something in Exp and 20 boats have entered the area, you first need to click a away 20 pop-up windows before you can do anything in Exp.
- There are many drilling rigs that have a potential restricted area around them but also have an AIS transponder themselves. Ideally you would be able to define a race note with 1 mouse click to be the circular area of (e.g.) 500 meters around the rig.
A few suggestions how this feature can be improved in Exp:
- Make it possible to only raise a warning in case a class-B transponder enters the restricted area. This will prevent commercial ships to raise a warning. From the class-B transponders entering the restricted area most will be race competitors anyway so in the rare situation that a non-race competitor enters the area it is doable to just acknowledge the warning.
- Make it possible to only raise the warning in case one of the 7 boats that can be followed in Exp enters the restricted area. Limitation of this feature is that in many races there are more than 7 boats for which you would like he warning to be triggered.
- Give the user the option to define a file (or list) with all MMSI's for which the warning should be triggered when they enter a restricted area.
Maybe other Exp users have more and/or better suggestions?
