Newport Bermuda 2016

My challenge for the NBR 2016 was to take a boat that had placed 10th in 2014 and try to improve their program.  The boat has a B&G H5000 Hercules fully integrated Expedition, a Zeus 12 downstairs and a Zeus 7 in the cockpit, mast displays, and 4 graphic displays over the compaionway.  One area where the owner felt there was room for improvement was to better utilize the awesome instrumentation.  In order to do this we had some help from Marlink who provided the air time for the Fleet Broadband 150.  We also had constant support from Selig Berman at yachtSOFT.com  On the Exp side this forum and Nick were both readily available to answer questions.

We ran Exp continuously from October until the race, running scenarios, and becoming familiar with the features we thought we would use/need in the race.

During the race we downloaded WX and GS data 3 or 4 times a day and ran optimizations with each download.  Some we took heed to, others not.  We used the YB Tracking feature in Exp to follow our close competitors and see how the fleet was doing.  While not really current enough (4 hour delay) to be tactical; it was certain a strong motivational tool for the crew!

We had a fabulous crew, several on their first NBR, who worked really hard. We had great sails from North, lots of support from the crew at Pilots Pt North, and a great boat the Elan 450.

Did Expedition win the race for us? It's hard to say; but we were never hurting for hard data and 'what if' scenarios and the availability of any data the crew wanted; easily displayed.

We were 2nd in Class 9...owner and crew very pleased!
Cheers/Skål
