Coloured AIS targets whilst Tracking

Expedition, in combination with Winning Tides, really helped us winning both our class and the Black Group overall during Cowes Week 2018.
One thing that I think could be really nice for crowded regattas like Cowes Week is to have the possibility to colour label the AIS targets that are being tracked. In Expedition, you can track up to 7 boats by AIS by entering their MMSI number.

On one specific very crowded day in the Eastern Solent we had a downwind leg from Ride to the Brambles against the tide. There was a 50-50 split in the class. One half going for the Island shore and the other choosing the mainland shore. With all the traffic in the Solent, it was difficult to stay in visual contact with the other group and even the AIS tracking on the chart proved to be very difficult: with dozens of AIS targets, it was very hard to recognise the boats in our fleet. If you could have given the 7 tracked targets a different colour, tracking the oposition would have been a lot easier, resulting in more time for the navigator to focus on the other duties that come with round the cans racing in the Solent (calling courses, TWA's, splits, laylines, currents and depths).

Thanks

Re: Coloured AIS targets whilst Tracking

Related to this:
You can track boat 1-7 via AIS and have their data displayed in number boxes and stripchart (nice!).
However, afaik you can not display their tracks on the map, like you can do for boat tracking via YB etc.
Yes, you can display AIS trails,  but you can only enable this for ALL AIS boats (which becomes too cluttered), not only your boat 1-7.

Would it be possible to plot the tracks of boat 1-7 on the map, e.g. when you have "race tracking tracks" enabled under Settings - Display - Boat ?

Re: Coloured AIS targets whilst Tracking

I was just thinking about that while testing this. The multi boat thing was originally designed when we were 2 boat AC testing and then wanted to follow the other boat with the laser. Then we put all the weather and mark boats into it. They had up to a hundred boats in it last AC.

At present, you can draw the AIS tracks.

Maybe I need to rethink all this …

Re: Coloured AIS targets whilst Tracking

You mean you CAN or CANNOT draw the AIS tracks (for boats 1-7 only)?  If you can,  how to enable it?

Re: Coloured AIS targets whilst Tracking

Certainly, the Expedition all-or-nothing AIS tracking is really messy at the start ... spaghetti junction.  I set up AIS 1-7 tracking and switch on AIS later in the battle as the fleet dissapates.
The big issue in E coast Aus is that AIS capability is mandatory, but switching it on is not ..... so during the night there are random appearances and disappearances as competitors take a furtive look and then switch off again ... rather defeats the purpose.

Re: Coloured AIS targets whilst Tracking

ZZ - the AIS tracks are for all targets. I don't have an option to draw other boat tracks at present.

Duncan - another option would be to use the AIS target filter. You would want to disable it at some point though.

Text background?

They have to transmit in order to receive?
most boats here in the usa have a switch to turn of transmitting, but receiving stays on

That's easily fixed.. Do what RORC do and put it into the SI's

e.g

"5 AIS 5.1 All boats are required to have their AIS transceivers switched on and able to transmit (at least every 5 minutes) and receive from 0900 on Saturday 28th July and throughout the race. 5.2 A boat’s AIS must transmit: the boat’s MMSI number, current racing name. 5.3 Nothing shall be done to inhibit AIS transmissions 5.4 Boats unable to meet these requirements shall submit comprehensive details of the reason on their Declaration Form and may be subject to protest. The penalty for breaking this rule is at the discretion of the Protest Committee and may include disqualification."
