Free , bandwidth friendly ECMWF ?

The racing rules say that data sources have to be free.

The only free ECMWF data source I see is : https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/wmo-essential

... but it has 2 problems :

1. no surface wind data (only 850 mb winds). It has surface pressure.  Can Expedition infer (geostropic) wind from pressure data ?

2. the files too large for Iridum : they cover the entire Earth.

Is there a free , bandwidth friendly source for ECMWF ?

Thanks ...

Re: Free , bandwidth friendly ECMWF ?

predict wind has 50km resolution GRIB of ECMWF for free
you can select the area and the timesteps to control the file size
You need to get it through their offshore app which is available for windows.
download the grib and then open in expedition
i think they have an email delivery option for that grib too.., and the offshore app will write the email request text

Re: Free , bandwidth friendly ECMWF ?

Probably the best solution is to have a free account linked to a different email address. That way you can only download the free data and can't inadvertently break the rule.

Re: Free , bandwidth friendly ECMWF ?

Great.

FYI, it creates a file named ECMWF_WRCTPaG_...

WRCTPaG is short for "wind rain cloud temp pressure cape gust"

Kinda strange that the pressure data on the https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/wmo-essential site is

PRES:mean sea level

... but the Predict Wind ECMWF pressure data is

PRMSL:sfc

... whereas the GFS & PWE pressure data is

PRMSL:MSL

Maybe the grib2 to grib1 conversion did this.
